After a pleasant costal ride to Salobrena we then turned inland & followed the old Granada Road to Velez de Benaudalla where we stopped for coffee at the “Castle Cafe”. Then retracing our route we took the Autovia back to Torrox Costa to join in the popular Ruta 340 Bike Meet.
We met lots of old friends plus some new ones, it was nice to see, RBLR Member, John Dawson from Alicante. After listen to some great Rock Music, eating some fantastic Paella & getting a little sun burned we went home by our various routes – another day in paradise.

Sunday 19th May 2013
After a hearty breakfast at the Manila in Los Boliches we left for all points to Ronda, this included a short mystery tour of Fuengirola – it was not an uneventful day! Up the mountain road to Ronda and when we arrived, we quickly found out that the alleged recession in Spain is a joke as it was impossible to find an empty table for lunch, even on the edge of town. So onwards and upwards across the National Park via El Burgo where we stopped for a snack and a drink.  Age was beginning to show at this time (not the bikes) so we took a steady ride to our casas - another day in Paradise.

RBL “Riders” Prepare for their Africa Trip

In May a group of local Royal British Legion Riders are planning to visit the Atlas Mountain plus many other locations in Morocco on their motorcycles.
As part of their preparations they need to fine tune their mechanical skills. One of these is the repairing & changing of tyres in the outback. To assist them with this they called on the help of Jose Sierra the boss of MotoFast (a specialist motorcycle tyre & servicing company) in Malaga. On Saturday 19th January a group of Riders visited the MotoFast facility & were given an excellent demonstration on the manual removal & repair of motorcycle tyres both tubed & tubeless. Jose also passed on many other tips that will assist the Riders on their travels.
The Riders Branch is a National Branch of The Royal British Legion whose members are to be found worldwide. Details on the Legion Riders can be found at www.rblr.co.uk, local info can be found at http://rblrinspain.blogspot.com/. Local “Ride Outs” are every Sunday.
Many thanks must go to Jose & his team for their valuable assistance and in giving up their time & providing the, necessary, help towards this Africa trip. MotoFast can be found on Pol Ind. El Viso in Malaga www.moto-fast.es  – Jose speaks excellent English.

Sunday 16th December 2012 - last ride before Christmas

After a snack at Coin we traveled, via a route through Alora, to the gorge at Valle Del Guadalhorce stopping at the Hotel La Garganta for a coffee. From there we went passed the lakes at Ardales on route to Villanueva de la Concepcion the roads clearly had a great deal of rain over the previous three days and were very very muddy - Craig did well on his"Off Road" Ninja! Following a nice lunch at the restaurant "Rincon de la Villa" we headed for home.

Wednesday 28th November 2012

As part of our training for our North Africa trip Allan Ellis and DP spent the day “Off Road” on the mountain trails North of Malaga. Starting from Coin they traveled various trails until they ended up on the El Burgo road above Alozaina. Following a cuppa at Terry and Perles they headed off joining the trails at Tolox and followed the mountain road to Monda from there they departed for home.

Given the recent heavy rainfall the tracks were in a very poor condition with a vast amount of fallen rocks.

Many thanks to Allan for his local knowledge.

UK ARMY TEAM PLAYS LOCAL CLUBS

A great evening of rugby, was had by all at the sports complex in Velez-Malaga with two of our local teams from Velez-Malaga and Loja playing a team from "19 Close Support Service Battalion" who are on tour in the Iberian Peninsular. All the teams had a great time and played their hearts out. The teams were well supported by the local & ex-pat community with the stands full.

This was followed by a meal at the Restaurant El Cruce.

Over 12 “Riders Branch” & friends rode in to support this event which ended up with the final game being played in, almost, darkness.

Many thanks to those who were able to attend.

Weather was great for December, about the same as a good UK summers day. We started at Benajarafe & went via the motorway to Coin to meet up with our members who live to the West of Malaga. We also meet up with Margo Dalby; she is one of the two women who, on their own, travelled to Timbuktu by quads. Margo is going to join us when she’s not too busy & hopefully bring along her friend from the trip. From Coin we went via a scenic route to Ronda ending up at a fantastic location, Bar Allioli at Estacion Jimera de Libar ( www.barallioli.com ), for lunch – don’t ask why we went there.

We returned via the Sierra de las Nieves National Park via El Burgos, Alozaina & Coin. As always a great “Ride Out”, in the sun on great roads through the beautiful countryside of Southern Spain.

Our pics speak a thousand words – come & join us.

Funeral of Harry Henderson Wednesday 12th August 2010

Last Thursday was the funeral of Harry Henderson. Harry, sadly, passed away on the previous Sunday in the Velez-Malaga local hospital in  – he had not been well for some time. Harry was the father of "Harley" Martin (Martin is our favourite local Harley mechanic and general good guy).

Harry, who was 82, had an interesting and varied life including war service with the Royal Air Force when he served as a tail gunner. He leaves behind a large family of one son, three daughters, fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren – something he must have been extremely proud of?

Martin and Harry’s family had asked that a number of “Riders” and his “Biking” buddies be in attendance at the service along with a number of friends.

We met up at lunchtime and a large number of bikes escorted Martins sisters

The service was a sad occasion but a fitting tribute to Harry with the service being officiated by the Rev. James Thomas, the local English priest from Torre Del Mar with the exhortation being given by DP – this was followed by cremation.

After the service everyone present was invited back to Martins home for an excellent buffet and refreshments.

It was nice for everyone present to meet Martins family, although we always seem to do this at sad occasions.

All in all I am confident that Harry would have aproved of the celebration of his life!

All our thoughts, I am sure, go with Harry’s family and immediate friends.

HARRY may you “Rest In Peace”

After leaving Benajarafe we met up the others at Nerja, we were also joined by Frank van Gerwep and Wilco Vonk from Holland ( friends of Gerrit). On to Motril where we had a coffee at the Castle restaurant. Looking up at the Sierras with snow still on the peaks was very spectacular. Following coffee the Dutch guys rode up into the mountains with the rest of us riding down to Torrox Costa for a nice Austrian meal and home.
The RBLR National Rally 23–25th July 2010

I flew over to the UK PM on the 22nd, to be picked up at Nottingham (East Midlands) airport by Curly Davies on his Gold Wing and trailer. Curly was to be my chauffeur for the weekend a daunting thought. The UK weather was at its best with the rain starting just down the motorway – waterproof suits are defiantly needed in the UK.

After a night on the piss in Aldershot meeting up with a few old mates and doing a bit of shopping we moved down to Bordon for the start of the Rally. The Rally was held at the local Rugby Club with us camping on the pitch & using the club facilities.

It was a slow start with a lot of the attendee’s not finishing work until the evening. When everyone was there about 350 were present with around 300 bikes. That night, following the mandatory Curly Bar B Q, we had a few drinks & off to bed on my camp bed provided by Curly – a man who can pull anything out of his bag (or trailer)!

Saturday morning there were a number of activities organised including a “Ride Out” to the Submarine museum in Gosport plus a free visit to the local REME museum.

That evening there was a bit of a do which included a fancy dress competition – you can see by the pics that Curly & I were not quite sure who was in fancy dress! There was the inevitable prize giving with DP picking up the prize for the member who had travelled the furthest. We met a few old mates including Karl who we hadn’t seen since Faro 2009.

Sunday morning saw us on route to Sheffield, via Aldershot, for another night visiting the local ale houses. At the end of the evening we visited the local “Legion” Club in Chapel Town, an excellent venue with great staff – a very well run club, they are to be congratulated.

In the morning breakfast cooked by Curly & then off to East Midlands airport for my trip back to the sun.

All in all a good weekend many thanks go to Curly for his, as always, excellent hospitality & transport.

A Few Pics and Words from Sunday 11th July 2010

This Sunday we started off with a short Ride Out before meeting up with the rest of the group at the Colmenar annual Bike Meet. It was a great day with the normal giant piella supplied by the local Bike Club. After the event a number of us went for a nice ride around Lake Vinuela and a coffee before going home.

A Few Pics and Words from Tuesday 6th July 2010
Tuesday saw four of us Dennis and Colin Scrivens, John Elmer plus DP on route to Gibraltar to deliver a RBLR Wreath to Kim Gravett, our member from Gibraltar. Kim is laying this wreath at the Menin Gate on the 21st July on behalf of the "Riders" in Spain and the Iberian Peninsular.
DP passes the wreath to Kim                                         Keith Brown
While we were in Gibraltar we met Keith Brown an ex Royal Engineer living in La Linea just over the border in Spain. Keith is a keen Rider with a 1400cc Suzuki and we hope to see more of him in the future. A good day was had by all with a bit of shopping and sightseeing thrown in. Special thanks must go to Annie, from the Multi Storey Car Park, for her assistance and friendly nature.

A Few Pics and Words from Sunday 4th July 2010
With the temperature at 28 degrees we left Benajarafe to pick up other “Riders” at Nerja. Onwards to Motril on the old coast road before turning inland towards Granada for our first stop, breakfast at “La Brasa” in Velez de Benaudala with snow still on the mountains. Then we took the new A44 (motorway) to Granada taking the turning off at the junction to the Airport and the A92 to Seville. As it was now about 34 degrees we took a break and fuelled on the A92 before turning on the old road towards Alhambra de Granada. This took us through open countryside to the town then turning SW to the Zaferia Pass where we stopped for lunch at a pleasant restaurant half way down the pass. After a lunch of spit roasted pork we split and headed for home – overall nearly 300 kms and another day in paradise!

The Bay at Le Herradura
As a couple of us had done 2,500 kms over the last week we just had a short ride to Torreneuva via a coffee stop, on the beach, at La Herradura (the horseshoe). The weather was great with a lot more traffic on the roads than we have had for a while. Following a nice lunch at Torreneuva we all shot off home for our Fathers Day celebrations.

John Elmer and DP Ride Out with a Speedway Star from the 60's - Thursday 3rd June 2010

Last Thursday John and David had the pleasure of riding with Mike Stevenitt. Mike was a member of the famous West Ham "Hammers" Speedway team in the 60's. We had a pleasant ride down the coast with Mike. Over a cup of coffee he filled us in with his very interesting Motorcycling history. There will be more to follow with some historic pics of Mike - watch this space.

A Few Pics from Saturday 8th May 2010

A nice "Ride Out" on a Saturday.

January 2010 “A Cold Month”

January 2010 in Southern Spain, like the UK, has had a cold snap to it with more than our fair share of rain. However RBLR Members have still managed to get out on their bikes every week. Sometimes distances have been short, possibly just a quick trip to Fuengirola.

On the 17th we went, with the Los Lobos (the wolves) Club from Nerja, into the Sierra Nevada’s climbing up to within 100 meters of the snow line. It was a cold ride up the mountains but when we got to the top it was 20 degrees. We had a great meal before heading home – we went out in the dark and got back in the dark - a great day with fantastic scenery as you can see from the pics.
Last week we were half way up the mountains to Ronda, from Marbella, when the mist made us abort our trip - with discretion being the better part of valour instead of going over the top and back via the twisting mountain roads to Coin we went back to Marbella & took the much safer coast road home.

On the 31st January we took the coastal route via Motril to Calahonda (not the Calahonda near Mijas) it was blue skies with a nip in the air. It was an area to which we had never been before and we found the beaches in Calahonda great I'm sure we will spend more time there when it gets a little warmer.

All in all our numbers for early 2010 have been down due to some members going to the UK for Xmas and the New Year and have not yet returned. A few members are in the UK on business with the rich and famous having just returned from Jamaica.

We have a number of projects in the offing for the rest of the year including a number of trips away not forgetting Faro 2010 – more of that shortly.

An open invitation is out to all “Riders” Branch members to visit us in Southern Spain and should any assistance be required for trips do not hesitate to contact us.

Blue skies for now and have a great 2010.
